A Long Journey
Pointe aux Barques Light is a long, slow drive across the state of Michigan from Ludington, but it is so worth the journey. The lighthouse is located at the very top of Michigan's thumb. If you haven't been there, go soon and bring your camera!
Oil House
This structure was built in 1892 to house the oil that lit Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse. The bright red cylindrical iron structure, while eye-catching, was built strictly for function to serve as a safe storage facility for the oil. Its red color alerted people to the fire hazard posed by the oil and any other flammable liquids that might have been stored there.
Tip of the Thumb
Today was my dad's and my first visit to Point aux Barques Light, near Port Hope, Michigan. The light helps ships avoid the very shallow waters of Lake Huron near Saginaw Bay. I love the birch tree in the foreground and the popcorn-cloud sky as the backdrop for this beautiful piece of Michigan history.
Pier Fun
Surfer Saeth Gronberg rides a Lake Michigan wave past the Frankfort, Michigan lighthouse on a sunny winter afternoon.
Icy Venture
Standup paddle surfer Larry Bordine cruises past the ice-covered Frankfort, Michigan breakwater . Larry is among the hardy Michiganders that make surfing a four-season adventure on Lake Michigan.
Visions of Frankfort
Reflections on the hood of my Suburban give me a doubly good view of the sunset afterglow as I see the "USA in my Chevrolet" at Frankfort, Michigan during a winter drive along M22.
Crisp Point
The long and winding, bumpy, two-track drive to Crisp Point Lighthouse was a big part of the adventure of going there on September 30, 2014. The moody El Greco sky over the lighthouse and Lake Superior as darkness fell added to the drama as I found a vantage where the sensor of my Nikon D800 digital camera, with a 30-second exposure, could accumulate what little light was there. I love how well digital cameras see in the dark!
