Titan
Titan
Titan is the most beautiful animal I have ever seen. He is a Friesian, a horse breed that originated in Friesland, in the Netherlands. My friends, Jonathan and Shannon Ray, own Titan. Like a lot of Friesian horses, Titan is well trained to be able to move gracefully, yet powerfully, in circles around his trainers.

Frozen Splash
If you look closely at this image, you can see a large splash of water between me and the fog building at Point Betsie Lighthouse. The ice-filled wave hit the sea wall first and then went airborne, drenching me, my camera, and everything else in its path.

Lost in Time
It has been interesting watching this old abandoned home near Silver Lake change over the last 20 years. My guess is that within the next year or two a good portion of it will collapse.

A mare and its foal look like they are attached at the hip as they graze in their pasture north of Fremont. I am struck by how synchronized they graze, walk ahead a few steps, then resume grazing side by side.

Manitou Morning
As soon as the Manitou Island Transit ferry landed at the dock, I made a beeline for South Manitou Light. I could see from the boat how beautiful the light and shadow were playing on the 100-foot-high white tower and knew I had to get to this spot ASAP. I waded into the shallows in order to use the intriguing water-covered rocks as a foreground base to my image.

Sunshine, blue skies, and melting snow along the Lake Michigan shoreline north of Point Betsie: March is looking lamb-like today. I am especially intrigued by the light dancing on the water covering the rocks, so I decide to emphasize the foreground.

Voices All Around
Voices All Around
When I was a kid, my brothers and I spent a lot of time climbing trees in our neighborhood near Lake Michigan. One of our neighbors had a huge old beech tree in his yard and he would let all the neighborhood kids climb it. While I was photographing this tree in Marshall, Michigan, I could hear all the laughter and voices of my brothers and friends in my head and it made me smile.

Bay Harbor Lights
Bay Harbor in Petoskey is an enchanting place full of beautiful homes and wonderful people. This tree, near the main entrance on US31, grabbed my attention as I was driving by. I turned my truck around and made a 30 second exposure. I love how the final image turned out. D800, F16 at 30 seconds, ISO 100, 70-200mm lens at 78mm

Home on the Range
Home on the Range
On several past visits to Fremont, I was struck by the "Out West" look of the rolling hills in the farm and ranch lands between Hesperia and Fremont. This morning Brad and I started scouting for shots along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Holland. But when billowy cumulus clouds began decorating the eastern sky we knew if we drove 100 miles northeast to Fremont we could find a foreground like this to put in front of such a "big sky country" backdrop.

Silver Lake Reflections - Panoramic
Silver Lake Reflections - Panoramic
Today is Christmas Eve. Everything is still and calm. It is nice to enjoy this quiet view of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes all by myself this morning because I know the next week will be crazy busy with Christmas celebrations and a lot of eating. I take time to reflect on what an eventful year 2014 has been and all the good times I have had with my family and friends. Life is good! D800, F22 at 1 second, ISO 100, 24-70mm lens at 70mm

My dad and I enjoy photographing these Scottish Highland Cattle south of Hart, Michigan. This one stared me down and looked as if he might charge at me at any moment. I know that little wire fence would have done nothing to protect me, but I couldn't resist trying to make this image. I love his swagger.

The Manitou
The Manitou
The ice breaking tugboat Manitou was called into Ludington's port this week to attempt opening a path so other vessels could get back out onto Lake Michigan. I watched this small tug work for over an hour to get about a thousand feet. To my surprise, the mighty little ship made it out to open water.

Royale Experience

Being on Isle Royale is an incredible Michigan outdoors experience. Just getting to Michigan’s only national park is an adventure involving a seaplane ride or a potentially rocky boat ride on Lake Superior. But look at what awaited me during my first trip to America’s least visited national park in September 2014.

Brad and I were exhausted from hiking and photographing Isle Royale for 18 hours straight, but we were not about to pass up the chance to view the Aurora Borealis from a spot without lights anywhere in sight. When we emerged from the wooded trail to unlit Tobin Lake, we could already clearly see yellow-green and purple hues in the sky. We separately and quietly found shooting spots that fit our own ideas for building images. I decided to include a seaplane moored along the shore that I could not see at that time but had clearly seen earlier that day. As my eyes continued to adjust to the darkness, I could just see a faint glimmer of light from the Northern Lights reflected off the leading edge of the wing. I made a test shot of four minutes and determined I loved the composition. However, my histogram proved my exposure was still well short of ideal. I made another two shots to fine-tune the exposure. Unfortunately, upon checking to make certain the focus was perfect, I discovered that neither of the shots was sharp. I had only about 10 minutes left before midnight, time for only one more seven-minute exposure before it would be past midnight and any image I made after that would not be eligible for inclusion in our upcoming book, Todd and Brad Reed’s Michigan: Wednesdays in the Mitten.

This was no time to chance failure. Our ethics would not allow any bending of the truth or cheating of the clock. I made a smart decision. I woke up Brad, who was napping on the end of the dock after, as usual, finishing making a strong image before me. Brad ran to my assistance, quickly and decisively fine-tuning my near-sighted, near-focus, and returned to nap time while I made my one-and-only, all-important good shot. When we chose the resulting image for the back cover of the book, Brad resisted my attempt to give him half the credit for the image because it had been a team effort. Over the years, Brad and I have been eager to logistically help each other turn each other’s visions into good art. Teamwork is a big reason for the individual and collective success of Brad and me and all our other staff members past and present. I love being part of a great team—Team Reed.

Ford Lake Sunrise
Ford Lake Sunrise
Our assistant manager, Rachel Gaudette, lives very close to Ford Lake in the eastern part of Mason County. For several years, she has been telling my dad and me to shoot a sunrise over her lake. Today, I finally took her advice and was blown away by the gorgeous sunrise that erupted.

I don't know who was smiling bigger when the sun finally came out today, this sunflower or me. As the famous National Geographic photographer Sam Abell might say, I was "in the presence of a picture."

The Grand Champion
Every spring since I was a very small child, I have spent time in the Michigan woods with my family looking for morel mushrooms. Today, I had the amazing honor of hunting for the elusive mushrooms with one of the best morel mushroom hunters in North America. Roger Thurow, a Scottville, Michigan native, has won the national morel mushroom hunting championship multiple times. He took me to a few of his favorite spots and showed me the ways of a master. I will never forget this day. My wife, Betsy, and our kids enjoyed eating the bounty.

Pere Marquette Palette
I have never been good at painting, but if I were, this is the kind of art I would try to create with a paintbrush. I thank God my dad helped me discover my inner artist with a camera. I also thank God for creating the Pere Marquette River. My family has spent our lives on or near the internationally-known water system.

The United States Coast Guard motto of Semper Paratus means Always Ready. My dad and I have our trucks packed full of all kinds of clothing, photography gear, and safety equipment, including several hundred feet of high quality rope. Today we put at least 250 feet of that rope to good use in order to make this photograph on Grand Traverse Bay. With my cold-water survival suit on and my underwater camera around my neck, I made my way out to this moored sailboat. My dad was back on shore and tending the other end of the rope. I couldn't have done it without his help.
