Friends of the Lakeshore
Friends of the Lakeshore
Seagulls are beautiful birds. A lot of people don't like them and I have even heard people call them "flying rats." Personally, I love seagulls and I never get tired of watching them adapt to the weather throughout the year on the shores of Lake Michigan. F5.6 at 1/2500, ISO 400, 600mm lens at 600mm

Portage Lake Pierheads
Portage Lake Pierheads
The back-roads drive along the Lake Michigan shoreline between Manistee and Onekama is one of my Michigan favorites. At this spot near Onekama motorists can look through the trees and see miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, including the Portage Lake pierheads. F22 at 1/30, ISO 100, 80-200mm lens at 120mm

Platte Lake Illusions
Platte Lake Illusions
As I look onto Platte Lake, it is hard for my eye to distinguish between the grasses and their reflections. I love the way they are intermingled and I work hard to stand in the best spot and trip the shutter at the best instant to make good art out of the illusionary scene. F6.3 at 1/640, ISO 200, 80-200mm lens at 120mm

Glen Lake Afterglow
Glen Lake Afterglow
While en route home to Ludington an hour after photographing a gorgeous sunset on Lake Michigan at Leland, I am stunned and stopped by the afterglow at nearby Glen Lake. The quantity of light is mighty low but the quality of light is stunning. My trusty tripod permits my camera to accumulate enough light over time to make a good exposure. Cross-Lake Pursuit
Cross-Lake Pursuit
Jeff and Sarah Tow stroke their way through the water during one of their Lake Michigan practice swims in preparation for swimming 55 to 60 miles across Lake Michigan in Mid-August. Their "Through the Blue" swim is intended to raise awareness about postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders. F5.6 at 1/1000, ISO 400, 80-200mm lens at 92mm

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
From over 11,500 feet above sea level, it is easy to see why the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was just voted the most beautiful place in America. I love how the clouds were in just the right spots in this photograph to add to the composition. My ace pilot, Ryan Johnson, dipped the plane at the perfect angle so I was able to get the wing out of the top of the image and the wheel out of the bottom. F8 at 1/1000, ISO 400, 14mm lens at 14mm

Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake
When I was flying 11,500 feet above Crystal Lake earlier today, I chuckled when I noticed that the lake is a similar shape to a bottle of syrup. Do you see it? F8 at 1/1000, ISO 400, 14mm lens at 14mm

Swimming at Bass Lake Outlet
Swimming at Bass Lake Outlet
A beautiful breaking wave comes ashore this afternoon at the Bass Lake Outlet along the Lake Michigan shoreline near Pentwater, Michigan. In the distance a family is enjoying playing in the warm water of the outlet. F8 at 1/1600, ISO 400, 10-17mm lens at 10mm

One with the Great Lakes
One with the Great Lakes
My dad has lived on or near Lake Michigan his entire life. He drove Coast Guard boats on Lake Michigan for 33 years and has been capturing her beauty with his camera since 1971. My dad certainly is "One with the Great Lakes." F8 at 1/1600, ISO 400, 10-17mm lens at 10mm

The Dam at Bass Lake Outlet
The Dam at Bass Lake Outlet
With an underwater camera housing, I got a unique perspective of the dam at the Bass Lake Outlet. The water coming over the dam felt as warm as a hot tub. I could have stood in the water the entire day. F9 at 1/1600, ISO 400, 10-17mm lens at 10mm

A Fresh View of Bass Lake Outlet
A Fresh View of Bass Lake Outlet
The shape of the Bass Lake Outlet changes every day. It has only been one week since we last visited the outlet but it has already taken on a straighter, more direct route into Lake Michigan. F9 at 1/1000, ISO 800, 18-50mm lens at 18mm

Torch Lake Mallard
Torch Lake Mallard
This was a very curious little female mallard duck enjoying today's sunshine on Torch Lake. She kept swimming right up to me as if she were looking for a friend to play with. I think people must feed her treats because she seemed annoyed that I didn't give her any of my protein bar. F7.1 at 1/250, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 50mm

Brad Reed\'s Day 313 of 365
Brad Reed's Day 313 of 365
The bridge on Jebavy Drive over the Lincoln River seems wide while driving your vehicle on it, but as a pedestrian holding a camera, those cars seem mighty close zooming by at 55 miles per hour. While questioning my risk assessment, I made the shot just in time. F8.0 at 1/100, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

Sunrise on Whalen Lake
Sunrise on Whalen Lake
I have always wanted to make a good photograph of Whalen Lake, the little lake that is east of Baldwin, Michigan. However, I have always been in too much of a rush or the conditions were not right to get out and photograph it. This morning however, my dad and I couldn't resist stopping to photograph the foggy morning sunrise. I am sure hundreds of little lakes across Michigan looked just like this today. Subtle Sunset on Lake Michigan
Subtle Sunset on Lake Michigan
The sunset tonight at the Little Black Creek Outlet at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, Michigan was a great way to end Week 36 of the Tuesdays Project. I waded into the water to get in front of the c-shaped sand bar. This also helped put the reflection of the clouds in just the right spot. F22 at 0.5, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 18mm

Nordhouse Lake Flowers
Nordhouse Lake Flowers
I have not spent much time at the Nordhouse Dunes Federal Wilderness that is located along Lake Michigan between Hamlin Lake and Manistee. Just recently my dad told me about a small lake he read about called Nordhouse Lake. Early this morning we headed out to photograph the lake at sunrise. When we arrived we were shocked to learn that because of the hot weather and drought this year, the lake had dried up. Instead of finding water, we found a giant field of wildflowers. Upper Hamlin Lake Sunrise
Upper Hamlin Lake Sunrise
A few weeks ago during Week 37 of the Tuesdays Project, my dad and I discovered a public boat ramp on Upper Hamlin Lake off Nurnberg Road. We discussed that it would be an excellent place to photograph a sunrise. There are not a lot of great vantage points in our area to shoot stunning sunrise photos so we were really excited. This morning I knew right where to head first. F22 at 1/30, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 32mm

Lake of the Clouds Star Trails
Lake of the Clouds Star Trails
For years I have been seeing photos on Facebook of fall color at the Lake of the Clouds inside the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Earlier this year my dad and I decided that we would head to the Lake of the Clouds during peak color for our Tuesdays Project. I am so glad we did. It is one of the most beautiful views in all of America. I shot this photo in total darkness an hour before sunrise. I love that digital cameras see in the dark.
