Patterns and photographs can be found anywhere. Even if it takes more looking. This design on Kasey’s bag has always intrigued me.

My step-grandpa was the late Dwight "Scotty" Scott. He was married to my mom's mom, Linda Scott. Together they ran Wren's Roost on the Middle Bayou of Hamlin Lake. After Wren's burned down, they opened Scotty's Restaurant in Ludington. I shot this photo near where Wren's Roost stood. F5.6 at 1/1250, ISO 400, 600 mm lens with 1.4 extender at 850 mm

If you are ever driving on Old US-31 south of Ludington, check out the giant tree near the corner of Conrad Road and Old US-31. I have always enjoyed looking at this tree and tonight I am finally making an image of it that I am proud of. With great clouds, it sure is a lot easier to make strong images.

The kids were raking leaves up at my aunt’s house. It was the perfect fall day for jumping in a huge leaf pile! David Benjamin jumped in, and then covered himself up to scare his little brother Joshua. I couldn’t resist making this image.

While sitting in my truck waiting for the rain and snow to subside, I noticed a puddle on M-116 near the First Curve at Ludington State Park that was reflecting the beautiful blue sky and dark storm clouds. I turned the truck off, rolled down the window, and shot this photograph. It made my day brighter. F8.0 at 1/200, ISO 400, 300 mm lens at 300 mm

I had never really noticed this old barn and silo just off the road of US-31 between Scottville and Manistee. The bright red bush in front of the barn is what I first noticed while driving down the highway. I turned around and got out and then I waited about fifteen minutes for the clouds to move into the correct spots to make a stronger image. I wanted the clouds to mimic the shape of the barn.

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas this morning. Snow coats the Christmas trees being grown along Hansen Road by Needlefast Evergreens. Like most people, I am feeling it is too early for winter or for the Christmas spirit. F8.0 at 1/5, ISO 800, 80-200 mm lens at 130 mm

The low clouds were a seamless backdrop to the dune grass at the Ludington State Park this afternoon.

I was shocked to awaken to a snow covered woods this morning. I knew it would be great for photos though. Dick and Kathy Bourgault's beautiful red house looked inviting nestled in the white snow and colorful fall leaves as I drove past on my way to the gallery. With the super high-water levels on Lake Michigan, it has transformed the shorelines. My Uncle Budde didn’t realize he had a very old sea wall out in front of his deck. For decades, the sea wall had been covered in sand. The high water has washed enough sand away, that parts of the sea wall are now exposed.

Shadow sits statuesquely looking out the window of our son Willie's home, hoping to catch sight of a bird. Cats are beautiful creatures that maintain their wild animal instincts no matter how tame they have become. F5.0 at 1/200, ISO 800, 80-200 mm lens at 145 mm

Three years ago, we had an orphan heifer calf. The kids helped bottle-feed her. She was named after my daughter, Kasey. To differentiate between the two, we call her Kasey Calf. This year was her first-year calving. She had a little heifer today. The kids decided to name it Pumpkin.

The backlighting on this American flag made the stars and stripes pop with color and contrast. I think the American flag is one of the prettier national flags around the world and I enjoy making photographs of it. F10.0 at 1/125, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

I am driving along Fountain Road when a sunlit grain storage building and barn on Dennis Road attracts my attention. I turn around to check it out. I love the patterns of the structures as well as the patterns created by the evening light and shadow. F6.3 at 1/60, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 120 mm

We are HUGE Michigan State fans. My boys’ bedroom is painted green and white, with a large Fathead vinyl print of Sparty on one of the walls. They also have State-themed sheets and bedspreads.

I have photographed these trees three times in the last few weeks, but never felt satisfied with the results. Luckily, the trees are very close to our new house on Riverview Drive so I drive by them often. Tonight the light was soft and the bark on the trees was dry, which was the combination I needed. While getting all our deer hunting stuff ready for opening day on the 15th, my dad and I took a break shortly before sunset and walked down in front of our cabin to the banks of the Pere Marquette River. We had excellent clouds, sun rays, and golden light as I made this image.

At the conclusion of the Coast Guard memorial service for one of my longtime best friends and shipmates, Tom Rau, the Senior Chief's hat rests in the helmsman's chair of Coast Guard Station Manistee's 47-foot motor lifeboat. The "Boat Smart" author, in spirit, led a last search and rescue mission. F14.0 at 1/40, ISO 100, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

Growing up on the farm, we only had wood heat. Two wood stoves, and a wood kitchen range heated the entire home. In our home, we too use wood as our main source of heat. There are enough dead or downed trees on the farm that we do not need to buy any, it just takes time and sweat to cut, split, haul, and stack it. The warmth it gives us on freezing Michigan winter days makes it all worth it!
