Todd Reed\'s Day 134 of 365
Todd Reed's Day 134 of 365
The sweeping view of the C-shaped shoreline from the Ludington city beach northward toward Epworth Heights has always appealed to me. I especially like it when Epworth comes to life for a new season and the cottages begin lighting up at night. F4.5 at 30.0, ISO 100, 80-200 mm at 80 mm

Brad Reed's Day 143 of 366
I recently bought a new firepit for my backyard and tonight was our first time using it. With my camera on a tripod, I made this 30-second exposure. One of the tips we teach our workshop students is that they need to learn to see like their camera sees. My eye could see a lot more details in the shadows than you see in this photograph. But if I exposed to make the fire inside the pit look good, I knew the shadows would look black.

Roots reach outward and downward, expanding the feeding and support network for a beech tree on the Michigan State University campus. I find the exposed roots more fascinating than the rest of the tree, which presents for me an attractive but far more familiar appearance. My grandmother taught me at a young age to look for the beauty beneath my feet. F22 at 1/5, ISO 100, 14-24mm lens at 14mm

Vertical God beams that are this distinct are a rare sight along the Lake Michigan shoreline. I can’t get out of my truck fast enough! Luckily, my gear is organized and I was able to get set up and capture this image at the first curve before the God beams went away.

I surprised the kids with a firepit for the backyard this weekend. We lit it and to our surprise, it showed its love for us with a heart!

I am photographing a boat in Harbor View Marina when I see a more unique view. The sheet steel wall of the marina is reflected beautifully in the water. I love the color and the undulating patterns on the water. F2.8 at 1/200, ISO 400, 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm

I inherited my Grandpa and Grandma Reed’s large grandfather clock. The kids and I have it in our dining room now. Tonight, I used my macro lens to shoot an up-close detailed shot of the face of the clock.

Kasey made this circular design out of putty. I liked the different shades and shapes. I knew before making this image at home tonight that I would make it into a black-and-white image for my photo of the day.

I got to the gallery early this morning before we started our private workshop with a group of photographers from Charlevoix. I noticed air bubbles in the bottle of hand sanitizer on my desk. I used my telephoto macro lens and shot the photo at F57 so that I had great depth of field and could get as many of the bubbles as sharp as possible. F57.0 at 25.0, ISO 100, 105 mm macro lens at 105 mm

I made this image today in my backyard in honor of my grandpa, Bill Marble. My Papa Bill has been a horse lover his entire life. This weathervane sits on top of one of my garages and I always think of Papa when I look at it.

This moth was almost invisible while resting on a foundation brick of my garage in my backyard today. Luckily for me, the moth allowed me to get my camera, tripod, and macro lens in super close to make this image.

Stumped
The wild colors, textures, and shapes on this massive stump caught my eye as I was exploring the small creek at Summit Park this evening. Luckily for me, we had magic golden light that made the colors, textures, and shapes hyper-defined. F22 at 0.8, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 26mm

I spent over 10 minutes standing above the creek at Summit Park tonight just studying the shapes and contrast in the sand and creek bottom. My eye kept coming back to the two swirls that were separated by a dark rock. Once the sun was low enough in the sky, I quickly moved in for my shot. I suggest to shoot less, see more, and know exactly what is exciting you before you pull the trigger on your camera. F5 at 1/60, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 18mm

Brad Reed's Day 181 of 365
My cousin Ryan, my wife Betsy, and I have a standing joke about black and white photography and "only seeing light and shadow." I am chuckling to myself about that as I make this photograph of a large tree inside Stearns Park in Ludington. F11.0 at 0.25, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 30 mm

Brad Reed's Day 182 of 365
During our Thursday night workshop tonight I noticed the sun hitting one of these large pieces of limestone. I waited over 30 minutes for the correct angle of sunlight and for a large enough wave to cover the front and backside of the rock. I am not usually a very patient person, but tonight it paid off. There is beauty all around us. Sometimes it appears hidden, or not easily spotted. I have always thought this candle holder was neat. It would always grab my attention as I sat at my patio table, so I decided to focus on it tonight.

Unique photos are everywhere if you practice looking for them. One of the best parts of doing a photography project like this 366 book is it helps you practice seeing patterns, shapes, and possible photographs every single day of the year. I loved the colors, tones, and patterns on this orange pillow tonight and decided to make it my image of the day.
