My seven-month-old son Ethan has strikingly blue eyes. I love to photograph him and document how quickly he is growing. He cut his first tooth today! F5.0 at 1/80, ISO 500, 18-50 mm lens at 38 mm

Today is the start of the second annual Westmaas family week-long vacation near Manistee, Michigan. Over twenty members of my mother-in-law's family come from all over the country to enjoy the shoreline and waters of Lake Michigan. The house we rented this year is near the 5th Avenue Beach in Manistee, Michigan. F22.0 at 0.4, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

The S-curve shapes of this tree along the Lake Michigan shoreline at Ludington State Park have long caught my eye. Today as I pass by in my car on M-116 a crow sits atop this tree like a beautiful ornament. It stays in just the right spot long enough to make the picture. I am very pleased to have found this quieter picture. F2.8 at 1/1000, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm

Today is the 35-year anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. Many people don't realize that storm hit all of the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan. The weather this morning was the polar opposite of 35 years ago - 60 degrees with the lake totally at peace. F8.0 at 1/500, ISO 800, 600 mm lens with 1.4 extender at 850 mm

My daughter Julia had her fourth birthday on January 10th. We had a party for her tonight at the Best Western Splash Park in Ludington with family and friends. I think Julia's favorite part of the whole night was blowing out her candles. F2.8 at 1/250, ISO 1000, 70-200 mm at 200 mm

This is the best sunset I have ever seen while photographing the Manistee Lighthouse. I tried to time it so that the people walking down the pier were in a good location for this composition. I used the natural framing of the pier and placed the walkers in one of the archways. In our photography workshops, we call this concept micro composing. The sound of ice forming and the sight of steam rising off Pere Marquette Lake have adrenaline flowing through my cold body this December morning. I race to get into place and work quickly to build a layered composition. What a magnificent moment to witness! F8.0 at 1/50, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

My wife Betsy and I were on our way to Crystal Mountain to go skiing when the sun popped out and created a layer of fog. I knew where a good photo could be made; I just needed to drive there before the light disappeared. This tree is near the corner of Fountain and Stiles Road. Thousands of people pack around downtown Ludington's main intersection for the second annual New Year's Eve ball drop. This is without a doubt the most incredible manmade event I have ever witnessed in our great community. F4.0 at 0.3, ISO 1600, 12-24 mm lens at 12 mm

The old Coast Guard station and lighthouse mark the harbor at Beaver Island as we pass by on the Emerald Isle ferry on our way back to the Michigan mainland at Charlevoix. A fresh breeze straightens the American Flag. It is a beautiful day for a cruise, a perfect ending to experiencing the island. F4.5 at 1/800, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 120 mm

The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw looks formidable as it docks in Ludington during the three-year-old ship's first visit to this port. The icebreaker stopped in Ludington before heading to Wisconsin to the shipyard. F7.1 at 1/400, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 120 mm

Before a big house was built in front of our picture windows, my wife and I enjoyed an unobstructed, grand scenic world-class view of the Lake Michigan shoreline from Ludington to Little Sable Point. Now I use the "twice-as-close rule" to narrow my focus and exclude the big house from the images I make in front of our home. F6.3 at 1/125, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 130 mm

Over 70 years ago my great-grandpa, Peck Reed, started Ludington Beverage Company. Shortly after the business opened he moved the operation near the corner of Lewis and Loomis Street in downtown Ludington where P.M. Steamers is located today. I loved the magic light hitting the restaurant window this morning. F9.0 at 1/13, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 20 mm

I made a picture I felt good about earlier today of a small sapling rising out of ice-coated snow. But this winter night's view of the Michigan Power Cogeneration plant on Sixth Street in Ludington finds me backing my car up to take a better look. Yes, this scene definitely stands out as my 365 picture of the day. F4.0 at 1.6, ISO 100, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

Brad's Day 1 of 365
The first day of shooting for the 365 Project and I finally feel like I have a purpose with my shooting. With my anxiety of not knowing what our next project would be lifted, the world is instantly clearer to me and I see photos everywhere I look. I am off to photograph the Badger in a snowstorm. My wife Betsy has eyes that look like sunflowers. I have always wanted to photograph one of them with my macro lens. This 365 Project has allowed me the artistic freedom and motivation that I haven't felt since I got my first digital SLR back in January of 2004. I feel like I am getting closer to where I want to be as an artist. F4.8 at 1/20, ISO 800, 105 mm lens at 105 mm
