Other Lake Michigan
Brad Reed's Day 201 of 366 - July 19, 2020
My aunt, Toni Greene, and her husband Tom, own a home a few blocks to the west of Chuck Wagon Pizza that is near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Tonight, I went to the beach near their home and photographed the warm setting sun while I got my feet wet in the big lake.
Rachel’s Day 203 of 366 - July 21, 2020
I enjoyed my first-time charter fishing with Hiatus Charters tonight. Todd, Debbie, Brad, and I all had the chance to head out on Lake Michigan hoping for a chance to reel in the big one. Well, I reeled in a whopper! A 28-lb salmon! This sunset followed us as we headed back to the dock. What a memorable day!
Saugatuck Natural Area
I stand atop a dune at Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan, looking northward into the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area. More than 170 acres of rolling, open dunes, wetland, and woods are now accessible to the public for non-motorized recreation as a result of a $19 million land acquisition made through grants and donations to the West Michigan Land Conservancy.

Sunset Splash
A wave bursts over one of the pilings left from a dock that once jutted out into Lake Michigan at Oval Beach in Saugatuck. I like the repetitive patterns of the worn pilings and the way the waves and light play on them at sunset on a June evening.

Warming My Soul
Tonight was my first ever visit to Saugatuck. My dad and I paid the six dollar parking fee at Oval Beach and spent an hour exploring the area before sunset. I put my tripod in the water tonight and made this image just before the sun disappeared below the horizon line. The warm sunshine was helping to fight the cool breeze coming off of Lake Michigan.

Oval Beach
By previsualizing what I wanted in this scene, I did not have to shoot many photographs in order to capture this image. I knew I wanted an oval-shaped wave to come in below my feet. Because of the shape of the shoreline at this spot along Lake Michigan at Oval Beach, I knew if I waited long enough, an oval shaped wave would come along. Five minutes after setting up, I had my previsualized image in the bank.

Todd Reed's Day 229 of 365
Dick and Patti Hale have seen thousands of sunsets from their Lake Michigan home at Little Sable point. "This is the best one I've ever seen, spectacular because of the variety of the color, depth of the color, variation of the cloud cover," Dick says. I too am overwhelmed by the intense color and amazing patterns as I shoot near the lighthouse.

Burning Light
Sometimes a photograph I knew at the time felt good, seemed like a home run, somehow, years later, still had not managed to find its way out of my vast storehouse of yet or never to be worked up digital files living only on my computer. I was pleased to discover and resurrect this image while searching through my old digital files for this book project. The photograph feels as good to me now as it did when I was making the shot on February 22, 2008, along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Portage Lake Pierheads
The back-roads drive along the Lake Michigan shoreline between Manistee and Onekama is one of my Michigan favorites. At this spot near Onekama motorists can look through the trees and see miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, including the Portage Lake pierheads.

Todd Reed's Day 236 of 365
One of my photography heroes, the late great Galen Rowell, made some stunning photographs of campsites during climbing expeditions. I thought of his poetic camp images while envisioning this shot at Fisherman's Island State Park. I am combining and balancing the light still remaining in the sky with lantern and bonfire light.

Lighting My Soul
I have witnessed God beams in the clouds over Lake Michigan hundreds of times, but tonight was the first time I experienced God beams below the surface. The underwater housing I am borrowing this summer allowed me to capture the beauty of the rays perfectly so that I could share them with the world.

Todd Reed's Day 238 of 365
During a hike from our campsite to Fisherman's Island, my wife Debbie and I are mesmerized by the beauty of the rocky, shallow lake bottom as Lake Michigan waves undulate above the rocks. I shoot as some of the rocks are nearly uncovered between waves. I want to convey the beauty of the rocks and the clarity and liquidity of the water.

Sunset Over North Manitou
I am one of many visitors and local residents alike gathered on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Leland to watch the sun set over North Manitou Island. Experiences like this are why Michigan is such a special place to live or to visit.

Todd Reed's Day 245 of 365
I love watching thunderstorms sweep toward my home from across Lake Michigan. I have seen a lot bigger storms and bigger lightning bolts, but I still find the bolts of this storm exciting and alluring. Why is it that so many of us are drawn to storms?

Rachel’s Day 268 of 366 - September 24, 2020
Summit Park is one place I don’t visit as much as I should. It is such a great park and beach! I left work early to drive that way to explore for photographs. It was such a calm, peaceful afternoon!
Leelanau County from Above
Michigan is a state with endless beauty. One of the most beautiful areas in Michigan is Leelanau County. When exploring the northern region of Leelanau County, you may feel like you have traveled back in time. Life seems to move at a slower pace and it is magnificent!

North Manitou Island
I have never had the pleasure of going to North Manitou Island, but enjoy viewing if from land when I am near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Today, I got to experience the island from over 11,500 feet above sea level. What a view!

Orange Ending
I am running with my large telephoto lens, camera and tripod to get to the Lake Michigan shoreline in time to capture the sun and colorful summer sky. It's just another great ending to another great Great Lakes Day.

Brad’s Day 317 of 366 - November 12, 2020
With the super high-water levels on Lake Michigan, it has transformed the shorelines. My Uncle Budde didn’t realize he had a very old sea wall out in front of his deck. For decades, the sea wall had been covered in sand. The high water has washed enough sand away, that parts of the sea wall are now exposed.
