Blue Moon - Panoramic
On the evening of the second full moon of July 2004, my wife, Betsy, and I walked the Island Trail at Ludington State Park. We patiently awaited the moonrise over Hamlin Lake. Once the moon appeared, it rose so quickly I was only able to get a few good shots. The moon at night is one of the most difficult subjects to photograph because of its relatively rapid motion and the low-light conditions.

Out of the Mist
Out of the Mist
The symmetry of this tiny Hamlin Lake island at Ludington State Park has caught my eye for several years. I tried many times to make a photograph that portrayed its symmetry in a special way. At last, one spring day Mother Nature provided the perfect atmosphere. The island was barely visible in the early morning mist. I composed a picture, set up the tripod and waited. Soon the island emerged out of the mist just enough to appear extraordinary. The view made my entire day extraordinarily great.

Clouds Are Your Friends
Clouds Are Your Friends
My dad is fond of saying, "Clouds are your friends!" This photograph is all about the quality of the light that is bouncing off the clouds and onto the water.

Cook\'s Island
Cook's Island
The shallow waters of Hamlin Lake are dotted with tree stumps. Many of the stumps are completely underwater and make a great hideout for different fish species. A few of the larger stumps stick out of the water and provide homes for live vegetation. Locals are fond of naming their favorite stumps. The stump in the left of this photograph is named "Cook's Island" by a few local Hamlin Lake dwellers.

Hamlin Lake looks like a mirror this ice-cold morning at Ludington State Park. I am delighted to have risen early to view this scene in dawn's early light.
