Brad Reed\'s Day 7 of 365
Brad Reed's Day 7 of 365
Except for four years of college in Grand Rapids, I have lived in Ludington all my life. In that time, I have always been intrigued with the old Thompson Cabinet Company building near Pere Marquette Lake. I was pleasantly surprised to find this American flag hanging in the window today. We found an old garage on the south side of Muskegon with a roof that created the American flag out of shingles. It was the coolest roof that I have ever seen. Someday I would love to do this on my garage.

America's Pride
While standing inside the gallery this afternoon and looking outside towards Ludington Avenue, I noticed that our American flag we put outside everyday appeared to be glowing. I grabbed my camera and patiently waited for the wind to gently blow the flag in a rolling pattern of red, white, and blue. In less than three minutes, I had made the best American flag photograph of my life.

On my way to a goodbye gathering for our oldest son Tad, who is returning to duty in the U.S. Army, I spot the perfect picture of the day. This shot is for him and for all of the brave men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces. The Stars and Stripes fly proudly above the United States Post Office in downtown Ludington. The grand porch of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island affords hotel visitors and guests one of the grandest views imaginable of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. Today I am most impressed with how the light and shadow are playing on the columns extending across the porch. D800, F7.1 at 1/400, ISO 100, 70-200mm lens at 70mm

Todd Reed's Day 144 of 365
I have been helping my dad, brother and several other veterans place more than 2,000 Americans Flags on the graves of veterans in Lakeview and Pere Marquette cemeteries today. Now I have returned to Lakeview Cemetery to make a picture that I think will honor all the veterans who have died in the service of our country. F4.0 at 1/50, ISO 100, 500 mm lens at 500 mm

This is at least the 40th year I have attended the Memorial Day ceremony at the veteran's monument at Stearns Park. The importance those attending place on this Ludington tradition is one of the reasons I love living in a small town. The American Legion Honor Guard fires the ceremonial salute to veterans every year. I admire their patriotism. F9.0 at 1/100, ISO 320, 12-24 mm lens at 12 mm

My dad has made several great photographs of this World War I memorial in Lakeview Cemetery, but I have never tried until today. The quality of light was great and luckily for me the American flags that were placed by local veterans were still on display. F9.0 at 1/80, ISO 250, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

A brisk wind snaps the POW-MIA Flag and American Flag to the attention of a passer-by this evening at Coast Guard Station Ludington. The POW-MIA flag salutes all present and past American POW-MIAs and reminds us of the price they and their families paid and are paying to help keep America free. A piece of Americana, Sleder's historic restaurant/saloon in Traverse City, has long been a stopping point for us. And so it is today. Amidst old stuffed animals on the walls, including a moose you can kiss, we have enjoyed great food and family times so good that the Reeds often seem to be on laughing gas. The sight of American Flags lining the front porch of the historic Epworth Hotel on the Lake Michigan shoreline north of Ludington always makes me pause and appreciate being an American. I have come here on the eve of the Fourth of July to photograph our nation's colors flying on the classic 1894 wooden structure because the scene always somehow reminds me of our American heritage. The backlighting on this American flag made the stars and stripes pop with color and contrast. I think the American flag is one of the prettier national flags around the world and I enjoy making photographs of it. F10.0 at 1/125, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

Undaunted
Undaunted
It is the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks today and I want to make an image that pays homage to all the Americans who have lost their lives and sacrificed during and since that tragic day. A strong breeze lifts a half-staff American flag sky-high at the Veterans Memorial in Ludington. I get beneath the flag and look upward, waiting for another gust to lift the flag high again. I see the resulting image as a symbol of how undaunted Americans are by those who try to attack our great nation, our citizens, our service members, and our way of life.
