This is one of my top three favorite photographs I have ever made. It seems to create a powerful emotional response when people view it for the first time. I think people relate the human struggle to the lone horse trudging through the deep snow in a blizzard. The legal name of the horse was Ultra Vanity Fair. A few years after making this image, she passed away. I am glad the she will live on forever in this piece of art.

Watching the sun rise over the Sleeping Bear Dunes is like watching a moving picture because the light and shadow change so quickly. Large waves washing a feather and stones up onto the Lake Michigan beach near Pentwater caught my eye as my older brother Tad and I were walking along the beach. I had to move quickly before the next crashing wave whisked the feather away.

Displaying more lights than a Christmas tree, the carferry Badger stays very alive even while docked in Ludington Harbor between Lake Michigan crossings. The coal-fired steamship carries passengers and automobiles between Michigan and Wisconsin.

All is quiet along the Lake Michigan shoreline on a spring evening before this historic summer resort comes to life for another season.

For years, my mom's family has called this the "deer shack." We would use the old wood stove inside the abandoned shack for a venison fry and all my aunts, uncles and cousins would have a hoedown.
