The World's Best Fall Color View
Can you believe this is Michigan? Who knew that Michigan has one of the world's very best spots to view fall color. You can experience this view for yourself around the beginning of October every year at the Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The park is located on the northwest tip of the Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Man Versus Wild
My dad and I stayed at the Konteka Hotel and Restaurant during our trip to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The Konteka is a great experience in itself. The staff and owners were extremely friendly and the food was great. The best part of our stay was seeing the coyotes that feed behind the restaurant. From near our dinner table I photographed this coyote that was running around outside. I had my dad stand up behind me to block the reflection of the salad bar in the window. The final photo turned out a lot cooler than I ever imagined it would. To me, it evokes a feeling of "Man Versus Wild."

Autumn at Munising Falls
A natural vignette of complementary-colored leaves makes me want to use them to frame one of my favorite Michigan waterfalls
Autumn at AuTrain
A small section of AuTrain Falls catches my photo eye this October morning. The green grasses, leaves, and streams of water make it look to me like a waterfall garden. The scene looks far prettier to me than when I was here in the spring.

Rapids Ride
Like a wake board shooting through the waves, an autumn leaf surfs over the water in the rapids beneath Munising Falls in Munising, Michigan.

Castle Color
Overnight the fall color at Miners Castle had become even more brilliant than when I scouted it out. Providing an added ingredient to the composition, a cluster of fallen leaves floated on the surface of Lake Superior. This is one of the many spectacular rocky views along some 15 miles of cliffs in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Forest Fire
The maple leaves are so bright that this birch trunk looks like it is on fire in the White Birch Forest along Lake Superior in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Grand Marais.

Rocky Top
It is rainy and, my heart might say, dreary. My mind, however, has been trained to know that cameras do not see like our eyes and hearts. So I am shooting away on the Lake Superior shoreline at Marquette, making my first images ever of the historic Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. My heart is pleased with the outcome.

Presque Isle Cove
Michigan's Upper Peninsula residents are fond of identifying as "trolls" those of us who live under the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. I am a happy troll today appreciating all of the rock and stone at Black Rocks Beach at Presque Isle in the Upper Peninsula. This rocky cove has an all-stone beach. It is a rock lover's delight.

Engine on Fire
My son Brad has always loved trains so when I spotted this retired Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad train lit up by magic light I had to stop and try to make a good shot. I put my lens right against a chain link fence protecting the train to keep the fence from showing up in the picture. This locomotive transported ore to the giant ore dock hoppers used to load ships with ore pellets on Lake Superior at Marquette.

Magic Light - Panoramic
I have jumped out of my Suburban and sprinted up and over a dune to get my camera and tripod into position in time to sharply catch this "magic light" striking Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. After a long day photographing in overcast skies and rain, my perseverance has brought me the "luck" to be here to witness and record this autumn spectacle. How could it get better than this?

Marquette Skyline
I think I am done shooting after an exhaustive day hunting for photos along Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula from Grand Marais to Presque Isle, but then as I am driving through Marquette this stunning clock tower comes into view with a band of "pink sky at night" over it. The gothic-looking 1890 building was built as a bank. Now the five-story sandstone and granite downtown Marquette landmark houses various businesses.

The Start of Hamlin Lake
I doubt few people have gotten a view like this of the source of Hamlin Lake. Today, I went flying with Dave Johnson from Mason County Aviation to photograph fall color in Mason County. Dave got me into perfect position to shoot the area where the Sable River turns into Upper Hamlin Lake. I would love to live on the farm in the foreground of this photograph.

Banningas Fall Bliss
On July 10th of this year for Week 28 of the Tuesdays Project I shot a photo of Mike and Nancy Banninga's "boathouse" home on Upper Hamlin Lake and wrote about the great memories I have of spending time there as a kid. It was fun today seeing it from an airplane as it was surrounded by beautiful fall color. That house has a beautiful view every day of the year.

Narrow View
For whatever reason the human brain reacts more strongly to the color red than most other colors. The little red home on the right edge of this photo sticks out like a sore thumb in this very colorful aerial photograph that features the "narrows" of Hamlin Lake.

Gumdrop Forest - black and white
I enjoy making photographs that look like impressionistic paintings. This photo of peak fall color in Victory Township in the Northwest region of Mason County definitely looks impressionistic. Every time I look at it I get a craving for gumdrops. Some photos really need to be seen large to be fully appreciated and this is one of those pictures.

Hemlock Golf Course
Hemlock Golf Course in Hamlin Township was rated one of the best new golf courses in America a few years ago. It is a beautiful course all year round, but it almost always looks the best during the second week of October. Hemlock is a very challenging golf course, but it is a "must play" in my book.

Come Golf Hemlock
The 17th hole at Hemlock Golf Course just North of Ludington is surrounded by incredible fall color today as I fly over. My grandpa, Bill Marble, golfs on this course almost every day in the summer and fall.

Lincoln Hills Golf Club
Lincoln Hills Golf Club is a beautiful semi-private golf club located just north of the Lincoln River along the shores of Lake Michigan. It is the course that I learned to play golf on with my family. I am not a good golfer, but I really enjoy getting out once a year to swing my clubs. Someday, I hope to have more time to golf, especially during the fall in Michigan.
