Painted Sand
Painted Sand
Just recently, we had a first time visitor to our gallery telling us that she had never been to Michigan before. She went on to tell us that the night before was her first time experiencing a sunset over Lake Michigan and that when she saw with her own eyes that the beach and sand really do turn neon pink during sunset, she started to cry. I was thinking of her when I made this image a few days later. F4.5 at 1/40, ISO 100, 70-200mm lens at 200mm

Magic light graced my wife Debbie's birthday party at our family cabin along the Pere Marquette River. My brother Budde and I planted these red pine trees 10 years ago. Now they have become a beautiful presence on our land. Tonight they complement the sky. F4.5 at 1/400, ISO 200, 80-200 mm lens at 80 mm

Second Curve
Second Curve
I never tire of the adrenaline rush I get when I see a great sunset forming, especially when I am not in position to shoot it yet. When I first realized that I needed to get to the shoreline of Lake Michigan tonight to shoot the sunset, I was standing on the tarmac at the Mason County Airport. I knew I only had about 15 minutes to get into position. I rushed off to the second curve at Ludington State Park and this was my reward. F13 at 1/15, ISO 100, 10-17mm lens at 16mm

Our 365 Project would not be possible if it were not for our general manager at the gallery, Sarah Genson. Today she came to visit us at our family cabin on the Pere Marquette River. If you look closely you can see her yellow sweater against the red siding. F11.0 at 1/60, ISO 100, 14 mm lens at 14 mm

People willing to walk a mile for a sunset get the best front row seats possible for watching another Lake Michigan light show. With every sunset episode being different, many of us never tire of heading to the Lake Michigan waterfront to watch the sun dip into the lake or the clouds. F4 at 1/320, ISO 400, 500mm lens at 500mm

Family times around a bonfire are one of the best Michigan summertime traditions. Residents of Crosswinds at Ludington relax around the fire after taking in a Lake Michigan sunset. F4 at 1/30, ISO 800, 80-200mm lens at 200mm

Werewolf Moon
I am not a big fan of scary movies, but it occurs to me as the moon rises past an ominous-looking cloud that this would be a perfect shot of the moon to use in a horror show. F4 at 1/160, ISO 800, 500mm lens at 500mm

Displaying their pride in Indian traditions and in being Americans and Michiganders, Indians take part in the Native American Pow Wow at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan. While taking a shower tonight, I noticed tiny water droplets on our new shower curtain. About an hour later, I came back with my camera and tripod and looked for some cool patterns and then made this photograph. F9.0 at 5.0, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 44 mm

Native American Todd Brewer showcases his traditional Indian attire and his dancing skills at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan. Brewer works in Northern Michigan as a paramedic and fireman. I admire his devotion to his heritage as well as his dedication to helping others in times of need. The Badger steams through stormy waves toward the Ludington pierheads. Watching the sturdy ship and its crew battle the elements makes for exciting live drama. I imagine many of the carferry passengers are not enjoying the ride as much as I am enjoying watching. F4.0 at 1/1250, ISO 800, 500 mm lens at 500 mm

Michigan Grown
Michigan Grown
One of the features I enjoy at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City is the booths featuring Michigan cherry products. The sight of these sweet and tart cherries at the Cherry Connection, Edmondson Orchards booth is making my wife and me very hungry as we make this picture. Summer in Michigan is never complete for us without eating Michigan sweet cherries and cherry pie. These sweet and tart cherries were grown on the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City. While trying to shoot some photos of people salmon fishing near the twin bridges in Ludington, I decided to turn my attention towards the beautiful cattails along the southern shore. With the blowing wind, I had to time it right with the correct angle and a good cloud pattern behind. F2.8 at 1/320, ISO 800, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

Carrying on the Tradition
Carrying on the Tradition
I am looking through my viewfinder at one of the most color-rich scenes I have ever seen as Native American children dance toward me at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan. I love that these children are learning to carry on the traditions of their ancestors. F10 at 1/500, ISO 400, 80-200mm lens at 120mm

The Buttersville beach is a quieter place today. The busy Labor Day weekend is over and the absence of people along Lake Michigan accentuates the fall look. F4.0 at 1/125, ISO 200, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

I would like to be as wise about birds and as in sync with them as so many Native Americans have learned to be through generations of careful observation and the passing on of knowledge of their ways. This gull seems to me to be a free spirit as it passes right over my head at the Native American Pow Wow at the National Cherry Festival. I am sure some of the Indians who saw the bird found meaning in its appearance. F10 at 1/500, ISO 400, 80-200mm lens at 200mm

The Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown Pentwater, Michigan was built in 1867. For years I have tried to make a photograph of the church that showed its grandeur and beauty, but was never satisfied with the results until today. F4.5 at 1/1250, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

On my way to WKLA to talk on the radio about the importance and value to our community of donating to United Way of Mason County I see my picture of the day along the Pere Marquette River. I pull off the road, run to the water's edge, compose and shoot. Sometimes pictures come fast and easy. F4.5 at 1/125, ISO 200, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

My dad and I had several friends call and email us about the fields of pumpkins and squash along Chauvez Road south of Ludington. I photographed these just in time. I am having a hard time resisting picking one of these apples along Pere Marquette Highway but my ethics keep me concentrating on photographing them instead of eating them. I am not sure whose apples they are but I am glad the grower appears to have a good crop to harvest despite the heavy frost this spring. F8.0 at 1/400, ISO 200, 300 mm lens at 300 mm
