The carferry Spartan, at left, and City of Midland battle wind-packed ice 25 feet deep at the entrance to Ludington harbor on Jan. 27, 1977. A blizzard with winds clocked at 55 miles per hour pushed the ice eastward across Lake Michigan, compacting the ice and bringing to a stop first the City of Midland and then the Spartan. Both ships managed to break free later in the day and resume their usual winter sailings.
