My life-long friend Christine Warne was busy painting a bird on the face of Anna Stechschulte at Friday Night Live earlier tonight. Christine was volunteering her time and talents for the COVE (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters) booth. F2.8 at 1/400, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

Reflections of an umbrella on a dock, a dock box, and man walking on a dock look to my eye at this moment like a man sailing a tiny sailboat. The umbrella reflections caught my eye at Harbor View Marina in Ludington. The more I study the reflections as people walk by, the more I see the potential for a fresher view; I love this one. Today the weather was less than desirable. It was rainy, windy, muggy, and depressing. However, that was perfect lighting for shooting close-up photographs of spider webs. I shot this photo in my front yard. The web was located on some unused landscaping pavers that were leaning up against my house. F6.3 at 1/100, ISO 800, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

The brilliance of these cardinal flowers rockets out from one of my favorite estuaries along South Lakeshore Drive near Bass Lake. The oriental-looking plants look even more sensational close-up than they did when I first spotted them during one of our favorite summer pastimes

Betsy and I took the kids for a walk at Ludington State Park this morning. While hiking, we noticed a large tree that looked like it was billowing smoke from its trunk. To our amazement, it was just steam. As we continued walking, we saw several trees steaming. Eventually, the forest was filled with steam and sunlight. F4.5 at 1/40, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 30 mm

This morning I met my dad for breakfast at Big Boy in Ludington. My dad was late because he found a picture to take on the way. I got bored and grabbed my camera and walked around the parking lot looking for a photo of my own. In a few short minutes, I found an S-curve in the pavement that was accentuated by the rainwater. Swaying in the summer breeze, Queen Anne's lace paints an impressionistic picture on my digital camera's sensor during a long exposure. The field in Summit Township looks and feels to me like a Monet painting. I want the photograph to feel the same way. F22.0 at 1.6, ISO 100, 300 mm lens at 300 mm

The Ludington Municipal Marina has recently expanded its capacity by converting its north edge into a day dock and seawall. One of the many benefits of the recent expansion is that the new wall has allowed the marina to better accommodate large boats. This week, the 80-foot Burger named Chateau Thierry was trying out the new dock. F8.0 at 1/125, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 27 mm

It is past midnight and still I am not seeing any Northern Lights tonight. This is the third night in a row I have stayed up late hoping to see and photograph the Northern Lights. I decide to make a several-minute time exposure of the stars, including the Big Dipper, and "paint" the Ludington South Breakwater Light with flashlight light. My dad and I decided to try a new adventure and see if we could get our little Boston Whaler from his house at Crosswinds on Lake Michigan to our cabin a few miles up the Pere Marquette River. After several attempts, we found a path that was deep enough. Along the way, we each were able to make a few good photographs. F2.8 at 1/1250, ISO 1000, 300 mm lens with 1.4 extender at 450 mm

I have witnessed the side of the 410-foot carferry Badger turning gold or pink at sunset several times, but tonight, the Badger was "painted" a fantastic neon pink color by the sunset. It was so bright that you wouldn't believe it unless you saw it with your own eyes! F7.1 at 1/250, ISO 800, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

Gary Lange, a volunteer Ludington firefighter for 40 years, stands out in a crowd of local professional rescuers being honored during Friday Night Live. I witnessed up close the heroism and devotion to duty and community of Gary and hundreds of other rescuers during the 23 years I photographed them in action for the Ludington Daily News. Mike Cooper of the Hamlin Township Fire Department turned on all the lights and gave me a tour of the new brush truck that the department purchased earlier in the year. I have been obsessed with off-road pickup trucks my whole life. This is the truck of trucks! F2.8 at 1/25, ISO 100, 18 mm-50 mm lens at 18 mm

Dave McClellan enjoys a conversation with his son while relaxing at his B15 gas station north of Silver Lake. Dave doesn't sell any gas. The restored service station is a hangout for family and friends and a visual trip back in time for motorists passing by. F9.0 at 1/80, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 80 mm

Betsy and I took the kids for a run tonight in the jogging stroller on our normal route through the beach and around the marinas in Ludington. When we were almost home, Julia wanted to get out and smell our neighbor's flowers. Julia informed me that these purple flowers were African Daisies. Not bad for four and a half years old! Lake Michigan looks beautiful and inviting for swimmers on yet another hot, humid summer 2010 day. I am tempted to put down the camera and jump in but I need to make a good picture first. F8.0 at 1/640, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm

Julia wanted to go swimming tonight at the Hamlin Lake beach inside Ludington State Park so she and I loaded into my truck and headed that way. On the way, the sunlight broke out of the clouds over Lake Michigan and I pulled off the road near the second curve on M-116 and made this photograph. F9.0 at 1/800, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

If "clouds are your friends," as Brad and I teach our photography workshop students, then this one is one of my best friends of 2010. I am enjoying my evening watching this cloud at the Ludington city beach, one of the best beaches in the world for watching sunsets and clouds. F5.6 at 1/250, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 112 mm
