Brad Reed\'s Day 37 of 366
Brad Reed's Day 37 of 366
Some sunsets are truly out of this world. This cloud looked like a giant UFO with crazy neon orange lights shooting out from the top of it. It reminded me of the last scene in E.T. It was an exhilarating few minutes watching this light show at Stearns Beach in downtown Ludington.

When I am not working at one of our galleries or taking photographs, I can often be found at the soccer field. As my cousin Ryan and I pulled into the Sterns Park beach in Ludington for a cool-down swim after a few hours of soccer, I noticed a vibrant orange streak of light dancing on the water. Knowing how fast light can change, I did not risk taking time to remove my shin guards and soccer cleats. I ran down to the waters edge and captured the reflections just in time. Needless to say, I got a lot of strange looks as I was photographing that evening.

Many times I passed this old house on the road from Shelby to Silver Lake but one autumn afternoon the setting screamed out at me to stop. Sumac blared out from the yard like a police car's siren. I love road hunting with my camera. I have driven tens of thousands of miles, down highways and byways, looking for new pictures or fresh views of pictures previously taken. Some days I never find a good picture. On other days they just seem to keep appearing. This was one of those days.

I can see clearly that this is a picture waiting to be taken. I can't help but chuckle looking at the "face" of these binoculars standing alone on the Ludington waterfront. They remind me of a recent television commercial depicting faces in everyday objects. I like this face. F13.0 at 20.0, ISO 100, 12- 24 mm lens at 24 mm

Our first visit to Dow Gardens was a photographic success. My dad and I were both impressed with the aesthetics of the famous gardens in Midland. All of the employees were exceptionally nice and helpful as well. Dow Gardens is another Michigan treasure that is perfect for an afternoon of family fun.

From shore, the Ludington lighthouse resembled a giant ice sculpture after an early winter gale subsided. I knew I needed to get close to get the strongest photograph. The treacherously slippery hike to the lighthouse left me questioning whether I should have attempted it. The view in front of my camera gave me my answer. As darkness was closing in, I was slipping and sliding my way back to shore, questioning my sanity but feeling good that I had mad this picture envisioned from shore.

On one of the high spots of Victory Township, northeast of Ludington, this windmill stands out against the sky. It is one of the spots I gravitate toward when the sky looks as if it will turn brilliant.

As I watched my son Ethan crawl over and plaster his face to the window of the front door of our house, I realized what I should shoot for my photo of the day. I photographed my truck sitting in my front yard through the beveled glass of our front door. Thanks for the idea, son! F22.0 at 4.0/ ISO 320, 18-50 mm lens at 30 mm

The founder of the Dow Chemical Company, Herbert Dow, developed the original eight acres of the Dow Gardens in 1899. Today, the Dow family continues to improve and develop the now 110-acre botanical gardens. I highly recommend making a trip to Midland to visit the gardens, ponds, sculptures, bridges, and waterfalls. Don't forget to bring your camera!
