For several years, I have dreamed of making an aerial photograph of fruit trees in full bloom taken from a dynamic angle with dandelions on the ground. Today, our manager, Sarah Genson, and I went flying with Ryan Johnson from Mason County Aviation. I told Ryan about the idea I had and he knew just where to take us. This is an orchard south of Ludington.

Coast Guard Station Manistee's 45-foot rescue boat heads past Manistee Lighthouse on a Lake Michigan patrol. A summer squall has passed and the Coast Guardsmen are making certain mariners in the vicinity are safe.

This white robin appeared in my friend Curtis Haynes's yard two days after his mom passed away this winter. The beautiful rare bird has been hanging out every day with the other robins in the area. My dad and I enjoy making environmental portraits of animals.

I feel like I am in a sculpted ice tunnel as I make this January image of Point Betsie Lighthouse. I am never disappointed visiting Point Betsie and this morning I am far too exhilarated by this frozen view to think about being cold.

Standing out after nearly 140 years in operation, Tawas Point Light towers over Tawas Bay near the Lake Huron shoreline. The lighthouse is located in Tawas State Park. Volunteers are on hand during the peak visitor season to give tours and help bring the history of the light to life.

Distortion is not a bad thing in photography; you just need to be aware it is happening and compose strong images working with the distortion. My underwater camera housing is set up to use my old Nikon D7000 camera body along with a fisheye 10-17mm lens. Coffee gives me a morning lift but not like the sun working its magic on Bass Lake. I love the quietness of this midweek lull before the traditional Memorial Day weekend invasion of this and hundreds of other Michigan lakes. Getting flying objects sharp and in focus while photographing with large telephoto lenses takes a lot of practice. For years, I would be presented with beautiful moments and would somehow mess up the exposure or focus, and the bigger the lenses, the more mistakes I would make. Today, I got "lucky" with these mallards and my practice is paying off.

The asparagus harvests are long past at Bob and Lori Green's farm on Monroe Road near Hart, Michigan. However, as an artist, I am much more attracted to the asparagus fields when they become overgrown, colorful bushes. F4 at 1/200, ISO 200, 24-70mm lens at 32mm

Snowy owls like to visit Mason County between Scottville and Manistee. Driving along US-31, I always try to keep a lookout. Perched upon an old metal fence, this owl was just waiting to be photographed. The subtle color in the sky and weeds added just the right touch.

The wind was whipping along the Lake Michigan shoreline during a vibrant sunset tonight from the north end of Stearns Beach. Using a wide-angle lens, I used the distortion that the lens creates to make a stronger composition.

My kids had their first day of downhill skiing today! They crashed hard asleep in the van on our way home from Crystal Mountain when I spotted this stunning silhouette. The flow of the tail was the finishing touch.
