Todd Reed\'s Day 83 of 365
Todd Reed's Day 83 of 365
I photographed the same crocuses again today; they didn't look as perfect as yesterday and the light was not nearly as good. Now I am back home without a picture with which I am satisfied. Thank God for Lake Michigan sunsets. The sunset view from our deck looks unreal. F8.0 at 1/500, ISO 200, 500 mm lens with 1.4 extender at 700 mm

What a week for watching sunsets. If I were not so busy enjoying making this picture along the Lake Michigan shoreline at Linlook Park, I would love savoring this sunset in the beach chair someone left behind for use on another day. F7.1 at 1/100, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 80 mm

Lunchtime Rush
Lunchtime Rush
Like thousands of other people who live along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Brad and I love to head to the waterfront at lunchtime to enjoy a sack lunch and see what Nature has to offer. On this June day, Nature is serving up a delicious mixture of clouds and waves.

The second concept we teach in our 20/20 Vision Workshops is immediacy. What we tell the students is to put something super close to the front of your lens, even if that thing is not the main subject of your photograph. Today, Julia, Ethan, and I went for a walk on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Summit Park between Ludington and Pentwater. I got into Kibby Creek and used immediacy to make this image.

Motorists driving along M-116 in Ludington State Park can feast on a view like this. When I was growing up, my parents took me on hundreds of drives along this roadway. I learned that the view can be amazingly different from day to day. That is the real beauty of it. I have also discovered there is never a bad day to view Lake Michigan, only some days more spectacular than others.

Betsy, Sean, the kids, and I are making the most of this strange and scary time in our world. What better way to social distance than to take daily hikes. We are blessed to live so close to the Ludington State Park. Our adventure today took us down a long trail off of Piney Ridge Road and we came across this scene at least a mile from where we parked.

Shore Mirror
Photographers who remain distant from the edge of the shoreline when shooting in the morning or evening when the light is low in the sky miss the magic light that often appears where the water meets the beach and washes back and forth with the waves. When I saw these spectacular clouds over Lake Michigan, I hustled to the water’s edge, knowing those clouds would be reflected on the wet sand. These clouds were magnificent. Seeing them reflected, doubled their impact.

Feel the Light
Feel the Light
The 80-degree weather today along the shoreline of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior was good for my soul. With the low angle of the March sun, I was able to capture all the shadows of each beautiful rock and the majestic looking piece of driftwood. The shadows and the warm quality of light are my favorite parts of this photograph. F8 at 1/200, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 34mm

Another concept that my dad, Rachel, and I try to use in our compositions is to make sure that the different layers of our images overlap. With this scene, I tried to make sure that the top of the dune overlapped visually into the water. I then made sure the dune grass was high enough into the background layer of the clouds, but not appearing to merge. The tips of the grass fit just right.

Sundance
Sundance
Growing up we had a beautiful yellow Labrador Retriever named Sundance. She loved to spend time along the shores of Lake Michigan. Like many labs, she had an amazing ability to retrieve sticks. Sundance however, had a unique ability to retrieve rocks thrown into Lake Michigan. Somehow she could find the exact rock you had thrown on the lake bottom. These rocks on Lake Superior reminded me of Sundance and made me miss her. F8 at 1/80, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 50mm

A young couple rounds the bend on their way back from an evening hike to the lighthouse at the end of Ludington South Breakwater. As they pass by me, I mention I took their picture. They tell me they just got engaged. The picture takes on new meaning. F2.8 at 1/320, ISO 400, 300 mm lens at 300 mm

Michigan Madness - Panoramic
I spent years on Coast Guard boats watching Lake Michigan waves curl and break. Their power and beauty demanded my attention then and commanded me to photograph them.

I am always trying to find x’s in nature because they naturally create dynamic diagonals in my images as well as triangles. This wave breaking over the jetties at the first curve along Lake Michigan at the Ludington State Park made a perfect x
