Hamlin Lake Mirage
Hamlin Lake Mirage
It is amazing to me how often mirages or double images of the shoreline will appear throughout a given year. As I stood on the docks at the Sable Resort overlooking frozen Hamlin Lake, I noticed that the Hamlin Dunes were being reflected onto themselves near the waterline. As I was photographing, the sun appeared and turned the sky a brilliant gold color and the mirage looked even more mysterious.

Hamlin Lake is a great place to practice your sailing skills. For whatever reason, Hamlin Lake always seems to be windy. Today the wind was pretty strong and I had to motor our little Boston Whaler around quickly in order to keep pace with this beautiful little red sailboat. F6.3 at 1/1600, ISO 400, 10-17mm at 17mm

When I was working up this aerial photograph of Hamlin Lake on the computer, I noticed how three-dimensional this image was. The shadow on the north edge of the lake makes the trees and homes off of Nurnberg Road appear to be coming off the page. D800, F8 at 1/100, ISO 400, 14-24mm lens at 14mm

Hamlin Lake from Above
Hamlin Lake from Above
My dad and I have been trying all winter to take aerial photographs of Hamlin Lake for "Tuesdays with Todd and Brad Reed" but we have had so little snow this year it was never worth our time or money. Our luck finally changed this Tuesday when Dave Johnson from Mason County Aviation took me up in his plane and I captured this photo of Hamlin Lake covered in ice.

Hamlin Blizzard
Hamlin Blizzard
Red barns in the snow are hard for photographers to resist. During a blizzard, I drove to a friend's barn because I was certain it would look stunning with the blowing snow. It looked better than I ever imagined.

Hamlin Dunes
Hamlin Dunes
While my son, Tad, explored sand dunes farther inland, I took up position on top of a dune overlooking Hamlin Lake and composed a view across Lower Hamlin Lake through the Narrows leading to Upper Hamlin Lake. Then, I sat in the sand and savored the view while waiting for the exquisite light the evening graciously delivered.

A golden sunrise over Hamlin Lake is hard to beat. I really like all the layers in this photograph. The soft rays of light in the clouds combined with the beautiful ripples on the water made for a picture perfect moment this morning as I stood with my camera and tripod near the warming shelter on the north end of the Island Trail at the Ludington State Park. A great blue heron takes off from one of its fishing perches on Hamlin Lake. I look forward to seeing one of the big birds on most of my hikes and voyages at Ludington State Park. F5.6 at 1/1000, ISO 800, 70-200mm lens at 200mm

Hamlin Volcano
Hamlin Volcano
Did you know that Hamlin Lake has mini volcanoes under its surface? Well, they look like volcanoes at least. They are actually massive tree stumps left over from the lumbering era. Many of the stumps are no longer connected to the earth with roots so every winter the ice will move the stumps into different locations. F6.3 at 1/250, ISO 400, 10-17mm lens at 11.5mm

Upper Hamlin Lake Sunrise
Upper Hamlin Lake Sunrise
A few weeks ago during Week 37 of the Tuesdays Project, my dad and I discovered a public boat ramp on Upper Hamlin Lake off Nurnberg Road. We discussed that it would be an excellent place to photograph a sunrise. There are not a lot of great vantage points in our area to shoot stunning sunrise photos so we were really excited. This morning I knew right where to head first. F22 at 1/30, ISO 100, 18-50mm lens at 32mm

The Start of Hamlin Lake
The Start of Hamlin Lake
I doubt few people have gotten a view like this of the source of Hamlin Lake. Today, I went flying with Dave Johnson from Mason County Aviation to photograph fall color in Mason County. Dave got me into perfect position to shoot the area where the Sable River turns into Upper Hamlin Lake. I would love to live on the farm in the foreground of this photograph.
