Window on Autumn
One barn window frames another as I peer into and through an old barn south of Leland in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I have tried to make this image several ways but this view feels the best. I love the rich tones and textures I see in my viewfinder.

Rushing to Sleeping Bear
Rushing to Sleeping Bear
Earlier today I picked Julia and Ethan up after school and told them we were going on a shooting adventure. We rushed north all the way to Stocking Drive at Sleeping Bear Dunes. We had to run from the parking lot to the top of a tall dune near the main lookout area. With just minutes to spare, we made this image of the sun setting into Lake Michigan. I love our adventures together!

Autumn Star
Autumn Star
This historic barn in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore south of Leland has been a photographic muse of mine for several years. When I photographed it after a heavy snowfall earlier this year I noticed the star ornament near the peak of the barn roof. I am thinking this grand old structure certainly looks like an autumn star today.

The Beauty of Change
The Beauty of Change
The forests of Michigan ebb and flow in response to the forces of nature and man. I am increasingly aware of the life cycle of trees and how dead trees can still be attractive, especially with just the right complement of living things around them. I found this dead tree in a tiny lake near Glen Arbor to be strangely beautiful.

As the sun rose over Hamlin Lake this morning during our Picture Perfect Weekend Workshop, I made this image of water ripples. I explained to all the students around me that I have discovered the key to these images is to rob the ISO bank and put that extra light into more depth of field and a faster shutter speed.

For a few short, but very intense minutes, the light show tonight down at the end of Ludington Avenue as incredible. With the first snow of the year today, and high winds, I had been keeping an eye on the weather all day long. Five minutes before sunset, the sun dropped below the thick storm clouds and the colors were amazingly vibrant and beautiful. I love Ludington and I am glad I get to raise my kids in such a wonderful community!

October Look
This decaying birch tree had caught my eye a half year earlier (see the previous picture and caption - "April Look"). But on this late October afternoon the colorful leaves whipping in the wind behind the birch provided a very different backdrop.

Some pictures just brighten your day; this one brightens mine every time I look at it. Red squirrel shots are easy to come by, but this little creature looked especially cute when he chose to frame himself perfectly between branches of a white pine tree along the Sable River in the sunshine of a September morning. I can't help but feel good and smile looking at this image.
