Double Rainbow over Weldon Creek Farms
I had just arrived at my parent’s home east of Custer, Michigan, and the smell of homemade chicken soup was in the air, dinner was ready! My two kids and two nieces were already seated at the table when we started to see the glow of the sunset through the kitchen window. We ran outside to watch and what we found was an incredible rainbow to the east! I hurried to get the tripod and camera out. The rainbow started to get more intense, and the double appeared at the same time as we were seeing beautiful magic light from the sunset. The light was hitting the tops of the trees; it was one of the most incredible scenes that I’ve ever witnessed! I was able to get a few shots off before the intense glow started to fade. What an incredible sight to see and share with the family!

Invigorating Light
“Invigorating Light” by Brad Reed Only a few times in the last 21 years of photographing Michigan have I had an adrenaline rush while shooting photos as powerful as I did tonight at Big Sable Point Lighthouse. For eighteen minutes before sunset, the sun was casting magic light onto the dunes and historic lighthouse inside the Ludington State Park. After the sun had set, the sky started to turn different colors over Lake Michigan. Eleven minutes later, I was witnessing one of the most colorful sunsets I have ever seen in my entire life. Everything, including the grass, lighthouse, sand, water, and of course the sky, were glowing different colors. I waited about thirty seconds before shooting another shot so that the moving clouds would align correctly behind the tower of Big Sable. By waiting and by shooting less and seeing more, all of the lines in the photograph ended up directing the viewer’s eyes right at the lighthouse. This was a night I will never forgot. Nikon D850. F6.3 at 0.6 seconds, ISO 31. On a tripod without a flash. 5:17pm on November 30, 2021.

Deadman's Hill
Northern Michigan scenic vista views abound. What impressed me most about the bird’s eye view from Deadman’s Hill was the wide range of colors apparent on this mid-October day. I look forward to returning to this marvelous spot in Mackinaw State Forest near Elmira

With his trusty retriever Kelly II serving as bow lookout, Dick Underwood navigates through the early morning fog to another fishing spot on Pere Marquette Lake. Dick is one of those diehard anglers I admire because they are not just fair weather fishermen. F5.6 at 1/5000, ISO 125, 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm

Reflections of Bond Falls
Reflections of Bond Falls
In the fall of 2013 Todd and Debbie Reed, Brad and Betsy Reed, Sarah Genson and I headed north on a shooting adventure. After a long day of traveling on our way to the Porcupine Mountains, starting off with a trip across Lake Michigan on the SS Badger, and a drive through Wisconsin, we stopped at Bond Falls to shoot, arriving at sunset. It was incredibly beautiful and we had great light. After getting the shots they wanted, most of the group headed back to the car, and Sarah and I weren't far behind, when we were stopped by this scene. We stayed behind for one last shot. It was worth it!!
