Abstract

Red-hot lava appears to be flowing through the parking lot of the Ludington Meijer store during a deluge of rain. Actually, the Meijer sign is being reflected in the water flowing across the asphalt. I set up the tripod under cover of the raised rear hatch of my Suburban but my camera and I are still getting moderately wet while composing this image. I am always on the lookout for hearts in nature. I spotted this red heart in a pudding stone tonight while golfing at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Ludington. When I got home and examined the photo closer, I noticed two more upside down hearts in the photograph. Three red hearts in one photo were pretty exciting!

My wife Debbie and I have arrived in Charlevoix just in time to catch the afterglow light along the rocky Lake Michigan shoreline at Fisherman's Island State Park. These two rocks quickly stand out to me because of their size, shape, texture and the way the light and shadow define them. F16.0 at 13.0, ISO 100, 80-200 mm lens at 80 mm

The new trout statue in downtown Baldwin is incredibly well done and is a magnificent work of art. As my mom and I were on the way to Legends Ranch to photograph the Veteran’s Hunt, we stopped to make this image of the towering fish. I used my external flash to highlight the details in the sculpture.

Since I was a young boy, my Papa Bill would convince his musician friends to play live music for us at family gatherings or his famous barn parties. One of the staple musicians has always been Al Villadsen and his concertina. Al played again for us today at Wilson Park on Hamlin Lake as we enjoyed our annual Labor Day Marble family reunion.

The Wright Family at Thundering Aspens Hunt Club in Mesick have outdone themselves again. Today they let us be some of the first hunters to try their new hunting clays course. Of course, my Uncle Budde beat all of us with his trusted double barrel 20-gauge Winchester shotgun, but we all had fun. Along the way, I spotted this heart-shaped rock and had to stop and make an iPhone image of it.

Tonight was our last 20/20 Vision Workshop of the summer. The light was not very good so we all had to look harder and deeper for our photographs. The waves in the channel were a little bigger than usual and were making some interesting pattern images along the shore. F4.0 at 1/50, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

After getting the kids ready for the first day of school tomorrow, darkness fell quickly. I was not sure what to make for my photo today. I was running out of ideas when Kasey jokingly brought out a mermaid that grew in water. It was larger than my hand but very odd in texture. I made several different images at various shutter speeds while moving the mermaid. I was happy with the way this shot turned out.

Just recently, we had a first time visitor to our gallery telling us that she had never been to Michigan before. She went on to tell us that the night before was her first time experiencing a sunset over Lake Michigan and that when she saw with her own eyes that the beach and sand really do turn neon pink during sunset, she started to cry. I was thinking of her when I made this image a few days later. F4.5 at 1/40, ISO 100, 70-200mm lens at 200mm

I was drawn to the design of my butter dish from the second I saw it in the store. Tonight, I focused on showing it off in a unique shot.

While taking a shower tonight, I noticed tiny water droplets on our new shower curtain. About an hour later, I came back with my camera and tripod and looked for some cool patterns and then made this photograph. F9.0 at 5.0, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 44 mm

Today we hosted a birthday dinner for Brad, at his house. We had such a good time that I forgot I hadn’t made my photo for the day! David Benjamin had a jar of corn that he wanted to grind into corn meal. He helped me set it next to a frame sample to create a mirrored reflection.

Sheila Sulak has several unique lawn ornaments in her yard on Tinkham Avenue in Ludington. Tonight she let me photograph one of her favorites in her backyard. I used a slow shutter speed and a rear synced flash to get the look I wanted. F9.0 at 0.6, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

This was one of those days, where the 366 Project got pushed to the bottom of my priority list. David Benjamin started having a rash on his arm, which spread quickly to his face and chest. We think it was poison ivy and he was a miserable little boy. I got creative tonight with a scent warmer and a nightlight.

Our kitty has the most stunning eyes. Kasey held her while I photographed them with the macro lens.

For the first time, my kids will not be with me the night of my birthday. We were all sad as we celebrated it tonight, a day early. I had a difficult time being motivated to find beauty. Kasey helped me see the beauty in this patterned watering can.

Today, while exploring the dam at the Bass Lake Outlet with an underwater housing for my camera, I decided to try shooting from under the water straight up towards the sky. The resulting photograph turned out a lot cooler than I thought it would. I love trying new things with my camera. F13 at 1/2000, ISO 400, 10-17mm lens at 10mm

Shortly after purchasing our home, I installed an indoor wood stove. There is something about the warmth of a fire on a chilly day to make you feel better.

Sometimes black-and-white images allow you to focus on the patterns and tones in an image, more than color allows. I felt this was the case today.
