I wonder how many winters this old commercial fishing tug has endured. Today it and its tender lie frozen in the ice on Pere Marquette Lake.

During a two-boat, Coast Guard Auxiliary Safety Patrol from the Holland area to Muskegon, I wanted to make an image from the 44-foot patrol boat I am on of the 41-foot patrol boat passing by Coast Guard City USA, Grand Haven, Michigan. I am grateful to the Auxiliarists who have made this voyage possible for Brad and me.

Chris "Uber" Raines loves the "peace and solitude" of wintertime fly fishing. "There is something almost magical about standing in the river as the water sweeps past you and the snow is coming down; it's mesmerizing," Raines explains during a brief time out.

Surf's up! Even on a winter day, Michigander Saeth Gronberg, a former Californian, is drawn to Lake Michigan when the waves are big. Here he waits for the right timing to catch a big wave as another big wave explodes against the Frankfort, Michigan lighthouse.

These were the thoughts running through my head the evening of August 20, 2009 as I was shooting this photograph during one of our weekday summer workshops. I was just glad our students were there to verify that this dream actually happened.

I love living on the eastern side of Mason County. There are so many uniquely shaped trees and structures. Tonight, this tree on Hansen Road reminded me of something one would see in Africa.

Marvelous Manistee

People who have not spent a lot of time along the Lake Michigan shoreline might find it hard to imagine that sunsets exploding with the most vivid color imaginable really do occur. Actually, the best color appears after the sun sets. Those who stay longer, relax and watch are often rewarded with a kaleidiscope of changing color.

On summer mornings, Pentwater can look magical. Sailboats, and other watercraft, line the waterfront of the quaint village and lie at anchor scattered about Pentwater Point marinas on this morning when light and atmosphere created an extraordinary view for a few magical moments.

Last fall during one of our Picture Perfect Weekend Workshops, I realized that you could see Big Sable Point Lighthouse from the top of the second big dune north of the Beach House at Ludington State Park. I finally made a good photo from that vantage point tonight. F2.8 at 1/200, ISO 100, 70-200 mm lens at 190 mm

The January Thaw is in full swing today, creating lots of puddles. I know when I see this lone seagull reflected in a puddle near the west end of Ludington Avenue that I have found the shot I was seeking. F4.0 at 1/500, ISO 400, 80-200 mm lens at 200 mm

One of the best things about hilly, curvy M22 is rounding the next bend or cresting the next steep hill and taking in yet another spectacular view through the windshield of your vehicle. I always look forward to seeing how this spot between Manistee and Onekama is going to look.
