My wife spotted the color in the sky as we were just starting to have our morning coffee together. She knows if she tells me about the light our coffee hour is over; she tells me anyway. Two minutes later I am shooting one of the best sunrises of the year as salmon fishing boats troll past the Badger and Spartan on Pere Marquette Lake. F4.0 at 0.25, ISO 100, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

Mike and Nancy Banninga have a beautiful home on upper Hamlin Lake. The home is actually built out over the water. The lower level of the home is a two-stall boathouse and the upper lever is the living area. I have fond memories of spending time in their house as a kid while playing with their son Adam and their daughter Heidi. M-116 is a short Michigan highway, but it is one of the most beautiful in the entire state. I have long wanted to photograph the lighthouse on White Lake near Whitehall. Today, finally, I am here on my way back from hanging the photograph I entered in the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. I am struck while watching this duck swim on Round Lake in Charlevoix how much it seems as if the female mallard is floating over a sea of giant emerald gems. From ships, to small craft to charming old homes and boathouses to classic-styled new ones, Round Lake in downtown Charlevoix looks and feels like a boater's paradise. My wife Debbie and I rented a 13-foot Boston Whaler like our own 30-year-old Whaler, so we could ply Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix as part of our 25th wedding anniversary trip to relive our first anniversary Whaler voyage in Charlevoix. As I stand on the drawbridge at Charlevoix watching boats ply the Pine River Channel leading to and from Lake Michigan, it strikes me how interesting the iron draw bridge railing is as the bright July sun strikes the side opposite my position. I am playing one of the worst rounds of golf of my life at Lincoln Hills Golf Club when I spot these maple leaves near the 17th tee already turning color. I put down the golf club and pick up my camera. I am so much happier and capable with a camera in my hands. Passion and practice make all the difference. My wife Debbie and I celebrated our first anniversary in Charlevoix, Michigan. Now, on the eve of our silver anniversary, we stand on the drawbridge at Charlevoix together as I make this image of golden light striking the Charlevoix lighthouse. My dad and I golfed today in the local chamber of commerce golf outing at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. Neither of us is able to golf often, but we seem to always laugh a lot when we do. Looking like giant spray-painted hay bales, rolls of brightly colored drainage tube await installation in a farm field along US 10 east of Scottville. I am on my way to the Scottville Harvest Festival, which celebrates farming, so this picture seems appropriate for today's photo of the day. F8.0 at 1/320, ISO 200, 300 mm lens at 300 mm

Driving down Conrad Road my dad noticed some sumac that had started to change color. He already had his photo of the day so he called me. Twenty minutes later when I showed up with my camera, this beautiful butterfly greeted me. F2.8 at 1/60, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

Sometimes it is the totally unexpected view that we need to be ready to capture. While photographing boats cruising the Pine River Channel between Lake Michigan and Round Lake in Charlevoix, a rabbit appears right in front of me to feast on grass and clover in a sunny spot. Ah, the plants of summer. I love it when the various roadside plants of Michigan begin blooming. I have already spotted many colors and varieties of these plants while traveling the byways between Ludington and Traverse City. But the hundreds of tiny flowers of this big Queen Anne's Lace have caused me to stop my vehicle to appreciate their beauty close up. F7.1 at 1/800, ISO 200, 105mm lens at 105mm

The Downtown Ludington Board has done an amazing job in the last couple of years improving the signage in Ludington. I love the logo and branding which now represent Ludington. We are the ultimate sunset town! F13.0 at 1/320, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm
