Tonight was our last 20/20 Vision Workshop of the summer. The light was not very good so we all had to look harder and deeper for our photographs. The waves in the channel were a little bigger than usual and were making some interesting pattern images along the shore. F4.0 at 1/50, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

I live for days like this when Lake Michigan displays its awesome power and beauty. The feeling of 40-knot wind gusts in my face, sound of waves rushing and sight of water flying over the Ludington lighthouse overwhelm my senses. Before making this shot, I warned several swimmers about a recent drowning in the same location.

Magic light graced my wife Debbie's birthday party at our family cabin along the Pere Marquette River. My brother Budde and I planted these red pine trees 10 years ago. Now they have become a beautiful presence on our land. Tonight they complement the sky. F4.5 at 1/400, ISO 200, 80-200 mm lens at 80 mm

Our 365 Project would not be possible if it were not for our general manager at the gallery, Sarah Genson. Today she came to visit us at our family cabin on the Pere Marquette River. If you look closely you can see her yellow sweater against the red siding. F11.0 at 1/60, ISO 100, 14 mm lens at 14 mm

While taking a shower tonight, I noticed tiny water droplets on our new shower curtain. About an hour later, I came back with my camera and tripod and looked for some cool patterns and then made this photograph. F9.0 at 5.0, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 44 mm

The Badger steams through stormy waves toward the Ludington pierheads. Watching the sturdy ship and its crew battle the elements makes for exciting live drama. I imagine many of the carferry passengers are not enjoying the ride as much as I am enjoying watching. F4.0 at 1/1250, ISO 800, 500 mm lens at 500 mm

While trying to shoot some photos of people salmon fishing near the twin bridges in Ludington, I decided to turn my attention towards the beautiful cattails along the southern shore. With the blowing wind, I had to time it right with the correct angle and a good cloud pattern behind. F2.8 at 1/320, ISO 800, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

The Buttersville beach is a quieter place today. The busy Labor Day weekend is over and the absence of people along Lake Michigan accentuates the fall look. F4.0 at 1/125, ISO 200, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

The Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown Pentwater, Michigan was built in 1867. For years I have tried to make a photograph of the church that showed its grandeur and beauty, but was never satisfied with the results until today. F4.5 at 1/1250, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

On my way to WKLA to talk on the radio about the importance and value to our community of donating to United Way of Mason County I see my picture of the day along the Pere Marquette River. I pull off the road, run to the water's edge, compose and shoot. Sometimes pictures come fast and easy. F4.5 at 1/125, ISO 200, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

My dad and I had several friends call and email us about the fields of pumpkins and squash along Chauvez Road south of Ludington. I photographed these just in time. The farmers and their equipment were right behind me getting ready to make their harvest. F5.6 at 1/640, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

I am having a hard time resisting picking one of these apples along Pere Marquette Highway but my ethics keep me concentrating on photographing them instead of eating them. I am not sure whose apples they are but I am glad the grower appears to have a good crop to harvest despite the heavy frost this spring. F8.0 at 1/400, ISO 200, 300 mm lens at 300 mm

Ludington High School junior Boyd Meeker looks downfield as a Muskegon Orchard View player sets his eyes on the ball. The Orioles played very well tonight, but they could not stop Orchard View's running game. F5.6 at 1/250, ISO 2500, 600 mm lens with 1.4 extender at 850 mm

My wife spotted the color in the sky as we were just starting to have our morning coffee together. She knows if she tells me about the light our coffee hour is over; she tells me anyway. Two minutes later I am shooting one of the best sunrises of the year as salmon fishing boats troll past the Badger and Spartan on Pere Marquette Lake. F4.0 at 0.25, ISO 100, 12-24 mm lens at 24 mm

M-116 is a short Michigan highway, but it is one of the most beautiful in the entire state. Todd and Brad Reed Photography, House of Flavors, the Skate Park, Stearns Park, Cartier Park, Epworth, Lincoln Hills Golf Club, and Ludington State Park are just a few of the attractions along M-116. I have long wanted to photograph the lighthouse on White Lake near Whitehall. Today, finally, I am here on my way back from hanging the photograph I entered in the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. The White River Light Station, built in 1876 and now a museum, looks storybook perfect. F8.0 at 1/250, ISO 100, 12-24 mm lens at 22 mm

Betsy, Ethan, and I all have the flu today. It has not been a fun day to say the least, but making a photo of the day in our backyard does take my mind off of being sick for a little while. F8.0 at 1/60, ISO 800, 18-50 mm lens at 50 mm

Patrick Seward made my day today when he showed up at the gallery this morning and asked me if I wanted to drive his in-laws' 1965 Mustang fastback. I jumped at the chance. We drove along M-116 to Ludington State Park and back. It was awesome! F13.0 at 1/200, ISO 100, 18-50 mm lens at 18 mm

I am playing one of the worst rounds of golf of my life at Lincoln Hills Golf Club when I spot these maple leaves near the 17th tee already turning color. I put down the golf club and pick up my camera. I am so much happier and capable with a camera in my hands. Passion and practice make all the difference.
